Based on the life, adventures and affairs of the world’s most famous lover from Venice, Casanova and the Wonders of Baroque uses music and dance to portray the eccentric and brilliant world of “new science”.

Casanova knew how to endear himself to everyone, not only to women. He was able to charm rich old men and men of the Church thanks to his brilliant conversation, an encyclopedic mind (he was a writer, poet, violinist, alchemist, occultist, diplomat, philosopher, secret agent and a passionate mathematician) and for narrating intriguing tales of his travels at a time when very few people travelled.

Casanova met many of the most extraordinary personalities of his time and wrote about them in his Story of my Life: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, Madame de Pompadour, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benjamin Franklin, Catherine the Great and Frederick II of Prussia.

Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was a guest at the Courts of the most important European capitals. There, he engaged in diplomatic missions, proposed reforms, traded fabrics, organized lotteries and parties, and seduced many women from all walks of life – including an ordinary girl, a singer who pretended to be a castrato to be able to perform in public, a noble woman and a nun.

Casanova and the Wonders of Baroque invites us to one of those parties the Venetian gentleman loved to throw, where we imagined dances would be performed on the notes of Jean Baptiste Lully’s Marche, Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Premier Minuet from Les Indes Galantes, Mozart’s Contredanse and Minuets and alternate with music by Bach, Boccherini and Vivaldi (the latter conjuring up Casanova the violinist), arias sung by Bellino (who was not a castrato singer but a woman with whom Casanova fell madly in love and had an illegitimate son, Cesarino Lanti) and brilliant conversations on Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire.

Casanova failed to understand the scope of the transformation that was about to occur and that would propel history along unknown paths. Until he died, he held on to the old regime and to the social class from which he was excluded even when it was doomed to disappear.

About the show

Casanova and the Wonders of Baroque features four to six professional dancers, an actor, two to three musicians – one of whom will be portraying Casanova the violinist – and an Opera singer playing Bellino. Some of the music pieces will be pre-recorded.
